Projects – Institutional/Education/Commercial
Institutional, educational and commercial clients have been a major focus for YEI Engineers since our inception. One of our major clients has been Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where we have provided design services through open-end contracts as well as on individual project assignments. For both corporate entities, private developers and educational institutions, YEI Engineers has provided comprehensive electrical, mechanical, technology systems and fire protection design services. We interact with corporate officers, users, administrators, students and community members to develop creative design solutions to successfully address project needs. Clients have included: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, County of Alameda, University of California Berkeley, Foothill Community College, Peralta Community College District and others.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL)
YEI Engineers has been responsible for over 100 projects for LBNL. We have been both prime and a subconsultant on open-end contracts as well as working as a prime on individual projects. Our work has included: electrical distribution systems, infrastructure replacement projects, HVAC evaluations, cooling optimization studies, cooling tower redundancy projects, microscopy projects, boiler installations, and mechanical/electrical deactivation plans.
Alameda County Medical Center
YEI Engineers worked on the schematic design for the Highland Hospital Acute Tower Replacement project. In addition, YEI provided MEP design for tenant improvement of the existing medical office buildings C & E, with a total area of 22,500sf, at the Fairmont Campus. These projects are part of the $770M+ replacement and upgrade project for the Alameda County Medical Center.

The project also included the analysis and documentation needed for Silver LEED certification.
The Unity Council/Christian Church Houses of Northern California
YEI provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for the remodel of the Posada de Colores Housing for the Elderly in Oakland. Mechanical and plumbing work included replacement of the heating and domestic hot water boiler systems, first floor air conditioning units, corridor ventilation system, stairwell pressurization fans, elevator, machine room HVAC upgrade and first floor ADA restroom upgrade. Electrical work included power to the mechanical equipment upgrades.
YEI Engineers has completed numerous projects for Verizon. Most projects have been design/build tenant improvement related projects including full service electrical, mechanical, fire protection, and fire alarm design. We investigated existing conditions, extended power from the existing panel boards, coordinated/designed raceways for the telecommunication and IT systems, rerouted sprinkler piping, provided new sprinkler heads, and relocated and installed new fire alarm devices.
University of California, Berkeley
YEI conducted a study to determine the electrical demands and capacities for Switching Station #3, located within the Oxford Street Corridor Development at the UC Berkeley campus. Through this electrical study, YEI helped the university to define the nature and extent of utility improvements needed to support the existing University buildings and the planned new developments.
Community Colleges
YEI has provided design services for numerous community colleges. YEI provided peer review services for the 12kv distribution upgrade at Foothill Community College in Los Altos Hills. As part of our scope, we were required to observe the power shut down process by contractors and ensure the smooth running of the project. For Laney College, as lead electrical engineer, YEI was responsible for designing power service for ten portable classroom buildings on the Peralta Community College campus, including fire alarm systems and telecommunications systems. Our work included field surveys, existing site power distribution analysis, power connection and raceway systems design as well as coordination of DSA review and approval.
Tahoe Center for Environmental Science – Laboratory Building, Sierra Nevada College
The 45,000SF Tahoe Center for Environmental Science Building located at Sierra Nevada College was designed for "Platinum" LEED Certification. The focus of the plumbing system design for building was to reduce domestic water consumption and the resulting decrease in wastewater production. Low-flow fixtures and recycled rainwater with UV treatment including capturing snowmelt for toilet flushing were used in all of the domestic water spaces.
Modernization and New Construction - Anne Darling Elementary School, San Jose, California
The design included plumbing for the Multi-purpose Building B with full service kitchen and a large assembly area, Admin/Media Building A East, Classroom Wing Building A West and Kindergarten Building C. The project incorporated sustainable designs such as ultra low flow plumbing fixtures, waterless urinals and instantaneous natural gas water heaters. The project attained LEED Certification.
