Projects - Transportation

YEI Engineers has been providing electrical and mechanical design expertise to rail and transit transportation clients for over 20 years. Services include mechanical, electrical and plumbing design for upgrading, renovation and improvements to stations, platforms, maintenance facilities, electrical substations, electrical power distribution, parking lots, administration, wheel truing facilities and Terminals (i.e. Bus, Ferry and Cruise).

We have vast experience in both small and large projects, and know how to balance budget and schedule while delivering quality design. Below are representative Clients and projects.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART)
YEI Engineers has been working with the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) for 20 years. We have been responsible for both rail and station related projects. Projects have included: the Union City Modernization Project, Concord Yard Wheel Truing Facility, the Hillcrest Parking Lot, VTA Bart to San Jose Line Section, the Seismic Retrofit to the West Oakland Station and Yard Shop upgrades (Hayward, Daly City, Concord, Richmond and Oakland).

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) - ISR
YEI Engineers worked on the "Integrated System Replacement (ISR)" project consisting of upgrading the public address system, platform display signs, SCADA, communication cabling infrastructure and emergency telephone and blue light stations for the Metroline, MMT and Sunset Tunnel. As Subconsultant, YEI provided raceway, uninterruptible power supply and electrical design support.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) – Central Subway
YEI was responsible for the Chinatown Station's electrical design. The new subway station consisted of five floor levels of Headhouse approximately 170' x 60' and 115 feet depth with extended cross-over cavern of 340 feet. Design responsibility included lighting, emergency lighting, 12kV incoming primary service for station facility and traction power, 4.16kV system for emergency ventilation, 480V and 208/120V electrical distribution system, uninterruptible power system, SCADA infrastructure, fire alarm system, public address system, access control and building grounding system.

Valley Transportation Authority (aka Santa Clara VTA)
YEI has worked with the Valley Transportation Authority as an independent client and in conjunction with BART related projects, responsible for the electrical and mechanical design for four pumping stations, two for trackway and two for roadway intersections. Our major work has focused on the VTA BART to San Jose Line Section including: the Kato Road Separation, Dixon Landing Road Grade Separation, and the Preliminary Electrical Lighting Plan.

BART/Caltrain/SamTrans - Millbrae Joint Terminal Station
YEI was responsible for electrical design and system integration for this "Design-Build" project that included building power, lighting, automatic fare collection, control, communication, security and fire alarm systems, street lighting, parking lot lighting and traffic signals. Communication systems included phones, LANS, PBX, CCTV and emergency phone system. Also, completed "Design-Build" projects for BART's San Bruno and South San Francisco Stations.

Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART)
YEI was responsible for the System-wide Electrical design consisting of 70 miles SMART rail service from Larkspur to Cloverdale with 14 stations. YEI completed Phase 1 Bridging Documents contract for the electrical infrastructure at crossings and bridges from San Rafael to Santa Rosa. YEI also completed the preliminary engineering for System-wide Electrical System which consists of providing raceway infrastructure for communications and train signals for the 70 miles rail alignment. Design included two tunnels.

Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District
YEI assessed existing electrical power, water, sewage and fire water utility lines for Larkspur, Sausalito and San Francisco Ferry Terminals and identified electrical power capacity issues for replacement of existing hydraulic gangway equipment and their compliance to ADA specifications. The project culminated with a report with recommendations, budget cost and conclusions.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) - Transportation Management Center (TMC)
Prepared electrical and mechanical "Bridging Documents" for a new 10,000SF Operation and Communication Center. YEI also performed technical peer review, prepared LEED criteria requirement and provided design consultation support through construction.

Caltrain – San Mateo County Transit District
YEI completed electrical design that included platform lighting, power to TVMs, ticket validating machines, parking ticket machines, communication equipment, i.e. visual message signs, station ID signs, underground conduits and main electrical service. The outboard platform improvement projects were completed for Burlingame, Hillsdale and Palo Alto stations. In addition, YEI was involved with various Design-Bid-Build contracts for General Engineering Contracts.
